A year later to the day (give or take a week) when I republished it for a second time, O'Brien is poised to take over the big job in TV talk - hosting none other than NBC's venerable gabfest The Tonight Show - so I figure I still have some time to get in some high-quality ass-kissing while the getting's good.
Possessed of an awesome intellect as well as the single best head of hair in show business, Conan O'Brien broke into television the hard way - as a writer. First on Saturday Night Live, and then on The Simpsons, he honed his often surreal, reference-heavy brand of comedy until he was tapped to host his own show, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, in 1993. Then, as now, the show is enlivened by wacky irreverence and much savage self-deprecation on Conan's part; I still have no idea why I love that show so much!
No one hosts the Emmys like Conan O'Brien, and I can only hope that some day he'll also get the big job in awards show hosting: the Oscars.
