I think the important difference is that Merv didn't get up on a pulpit or a soapbox and condemn us for all to hear. Of course, in a way that's almost worse.
But you're right. He was a hotelier, which means he had oodles of gay employees. He had huge influence in every sphere he touched which he failed to use.
In the end it was his prostate that got him. Use it or lose it, they say.
He seems to have done much evil from this closet. Shouldn't we hate him as much as we hate Jerry Falwell? I know I do!
