In a sad - if predictable - turn of events, one of the 40 men arrested and charged with indecent exposure and disorderly conduct in a Johnson (ahem) City, Tennessee, park has already committed suicide. Jerry McCloud, 55, dealt with the shame of having his closet door blown off by the police and the press by blowing his own head off at home.
With any luck, and maybe a little prompting, LGBT rights activists in the US will gain perspective from this tragedy and use it to get focus back on ENDA (trans inclusive version) if that's still possible.

To be quite honest, I don't think there are any mainstream LGBT activists who give a hoot about some toilet queen. Their agenda seems to be to find the best looking, straightest seeming gays to assure Christians that we're just like them.
ReplyDeleteFortunately, we post-gays are a little more enlightened. Honestly, the closet is corrosive, y'all. Even if Mr. McCloud was a totally straight man who just occasionally liked a free no-strings hummer, it's an utter tragedy whenever anyone commits suicide.
I'm glad you posted this. I found your post via my Google Web/News alerts I get daily. I'm the Editor of an LGBT newspaper and perhaps we can run this, although our paper serves North and South Carolina and Johnson City is actually in Tennessee.
ReplyDeleteThe credit for running the article goes entirely to Mr. Gagne.
ReplyDeleteI read the source article as well, and was confused since I knew Andrew Johnson was from Tennessee, but I will make the necessary changes.
